Beginning with the discovery of Uranus in 1781, Neptune in 1846, and then the discovery of Pluto in 1930, the revelations of the outer planets marked a time of unprecedented change in our understanding of the cosmos and our relationship to it.

What transformations occurred in our consciousness as a result of these discoveries?

How are these changes reflected in new understandings of what it means to be human?

What other unknowns are now hinted at, awaiting future disclosure to a newly cosmic humanity?

In The Outer Planets, Carter and Rabinowitz present the results of their meditations on these subjects in a multimedia exhibition spanning the entire Philosophical Research Society campus. In the Hansell Gallery, Carter unveils materials related to this research through the lens of science, astrological devices, and a culminating vision for a cosmic humanity. In parallel, Rabinowitz considers the deeper unknowns now raised by these discoveries. By means of self-illuminated artworks and architectural intervention, he draws our attention towards ever more fantastic possibilities in the darkest reaches of an infinite cosmos.

Together, they point us towards the cosmos within and without to reflect on our evolving relationship to an ever vaster and more mysterious reality. The way is opened to us through The Outer Planets.
